![]() So it was really ballsy of Nintendo to do such a weird Mario game as the highly anticipated Mario 64 sequel.ĭespite retaining enough Mario-like elements - the addition of FLUDD, the island setting, and the crazy story - makes this one of the strangest Mario game I have ever played. For years, I looked back on Super Mario Sunshine (SMS) fondly, remembering my time spent with it more than a decade ago when it originally released in 2002. The last game that messed with how Mario attacked was Super Mario 2 (or Yoshi's Island, if you count it as a Mario game). Gone are direct attacks like punching (you can still stomp, though), and instead you have to use the FLUDD water thrower to defeat enemies. Not in a bad way though, but it felt like another dimension or something.įinally, while it plays like a true sequel to Mario 64, the water-based jetpack FLUDD you acquire early on completely changes the way you approach the game. ![]() I thought, "is this really a Mario game I'm playing?", it all felt so different. I remember a stage on a beach with a sunset, and I think there was a hotel there. Gone are the classic Desert, Lava, Underwater (etc.) themes, replaced by a town hub, beaches, palm trees and haunted hotels. So basically, this is the Mario Bourne Identity.Īnd what about the Island setting? When I first played the game it gave me a huge Sonic Adventure (Dreamcast) vibe when it came to the visuals. ![]() After that, you get released and it's now somehow your job to find out who caused this and who's out to get you.
